Disability does not discriminate.
If you have wealth, it can take it away,
And when your wealth is gone, you will subservient to the whims of government.
It doesn’t care the color of your skin.
If you have a life plan, disability will change it
And it may change your family relationships.
If your ego is large, it will humble you
And give you perspectives you never had.
Disability can happen to you…at any time…in many ways.
Disability will teach you acceptance.
It will teach you resourcefulness….because it limits your choices.
You will learn to live in the moment,
And notice the world around you.
You’ll learn a level of patience you didn’t know you had.
Disability will compel you to make hard choices.
It will change you in ways you never imagined.
To all the decision-makers who believe what the government provides to people with disabilities are “entitlement programs”, remember that what we get enables independence and choice…choices you take for granted.
Remember that putting us in nursing homes triples the cost, takes us out of the community, and limits our ability to contribute.
Remember that together we all have a better chance of making things right, So please don’t shut us out.
But most of all, remember that disability will likely touch your life in some way, because disability does not discriminate.
